History of Thedford High School
Taken from A Pictorial History of the Sandhills
Above you will see the first school in Thedford, opened in 1889. It was known as the Sprague House. Later, a two story building was constructed at the location of the current elementary school. (Pictured below in 1909). This building had additions, including a country school house that was moved in about 1917 and attached to the main building. The seventh and eighth grades were then moved downstairs, and the upstairs was used for high school.
In 1947, the school building was condemned and until a decision could be made to build a new school, high school was held in the court house for the next four years, and the grade school children attended school in the churches and other buildings in town.
The present brick building for the elementary school was built in 1949. The first part of the existing high school was built in 1951. The home economics room, library, and shop were added in 1954. The new gym and five classrooms were completed in 1966.
The first high school had only two teachers and only the ninth and tenth grades. The next year, the eleventh grade was added, and the following year, the twelfth. The first class graduated in 1914. The members of that class were Jim McCarthy, Dan McCarthy, and Mabel Lowe.
Trojan to Knight
In 2008, Thedford sports teams welcomed a new mascot and new jersey colors after they co-oped their sports with school neighbor, Sandhills Public Schools. Together, they became the Sandhills-Thedford Knights. The new colors - forest green, black, and white, were incorporated into the jerseys, the school, and the new Knight pride that would fill the hallways of Thedford High School.
The class of 2009 was the first class that graduated as Knights. The Knights sports teams have been very successful, making it to state in all sporting events - Cross Country, Football, Volleyball, Girl's Basketball, Boy's Basketball, Wrestling, Golf, and Track.
In 2023, the Sandhills-Thedford Knights won class D2 District Football. This is only the second time that Thedford has won a state championship. The Trojans captured the 1971 Nebraska state track championship in Class D.
